Author interview with Ella Cotton

This interview will be a little bit different from our usual author interview. Ella Cotton, unlike other authors I’ve interviewed in the past, didn’t write a fiction book of any sort. Instead she published an adult colouring book entitled: Colourful Swear Words: Entertaining Insults in an Adult Coloring Book.

(Mystery Date With a Book is not responsible for any swear words that the author may use during the interview. Read at your own risk. Haha!).

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’m mostly a designer & illustrator – but would love to write a novel one day.

What books have most influenced your life? colourful_swear_words_ella_cotton

Charlie and the chocolate factory and other Roald Dahl books.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been drawing & painting since being a child. I’ve only recently started to try it professionally.

How long did it take you to write this book?

I had been planning this book for a few months and it took longer than expected. The one I’m currently working on is progressing much faster now I know what I’m doing.

Is there any character in your book that you despise? Why?

My favourite swear word in the book is Wankpuffin – which when I first heard it via twitter made me laugh and want to illustrate the book.

What would you say is an interesting writing quirk of yours?

I only use one brand of black ink pens to design my books and generally listen to French music radio stations as my French is pretty poor & I don’t get distracted by the chat.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I dress my cat in vintage feline clothing.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned when creating your book?

Some swear words are funnier than others. Some are much more offensive than others.

How do you come up with the names for your characters and places? Do they have a meaning or do they just sound right to you?

I search the internet for interesting swear words.

How many books have you written? Which is your favourite?

This is my first but I am working on two others at present.

Who are some of your favourite authors that you feel were influential in your work?

Roald Dahl & Stephen King

How do you feel about e-books vs. print books and alternative vs. conventional publishing?

Personally I love print over e-books. There is nothing better than opening a new book and falling under its spell. Some of the magic gets lost in e books.

What are your plans for the future?

I would like to have a large series of funny colouring books out there.

What is your preferred method to have readers get in touch with or follow you?

I love Twitter (@ellacottonart) and am also starting to make a website at http://ellacotton.tumblr.com

What question do you wish someone would ask about your book, but nobody has?

What’s your favourite swear word?
